What You Will Do
The Sr. Director provides oversight and leadership regarding strategic direction, activities and resources for the Portfolio and Program Management department. This individual ensures that business and IT investment in discretionary and non-operational spend is prioritized, sequenced for delivery, and effectively governed throughout the lifecycle such that business objectives are met and expectations for delivery can be appropriately set.
Understands the service portfolios and the ministries they exist in through regular research and interaction with business users and IT leaders, enabling a broad view of service capabilities, competition and roadmap
Initiates and governs the delivery of IT related initiatives through optimization of resources, work plans, milestones, risk, expectations, budgets and quality
Directs the process to prioritize business and IT demand across the enterprise portfolio to align with internal and external capacity to delivery
Establishes and provides oversight of an organization that has the processes, tools and people to support high level scoping of ideas, develop project proposals, understand rationale for change and articulate risk, develop business cases, obtain approval for projects, manage progress, escalate appropriately, resolve issues, ensure high quality of deliverables, communicate effectively and close out projects appropriately
Establishes effective demand forecasting and collaborates with HR, IT leaders, VMO and vendors to plan for future demand
Ensures appropriate tools are deployed to manage demand and perform project management activities effectively
Ensures project and program managers are effectively utilized and appropriate skillsets, experience, and knowledge are maintained in the department
Oversees coaching of best practices (e.g., agile methodology)
Solicits input from key stakeholders to proactively identify opportunities to increase the value delivered by the portfolio to the business
Participates in the development of strategic information technology plans, processes and solutions
Directs development and reporting of performance metrics and direct actions
Develops budget plans that support both long-term and short-term objectives
Communicates and interacts effectively at various levels of the organization including senior leadership, business stakeholders and technical subject matter experts
Writes clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles while tailoring the messaging based on audience
Facilitates resolution of issues through creative solutioning, open exchange of information and viewpoints and influence; uses negotiation skills when appropriate
Instills a sense of urgency in driving to completion
Builds effective relationships with partners and vendors to understand and commit to Ascension’s organizational goals; fosters goodwill and collaboration amongst teams and leads by example
Demonstrates principled leadership and sound business ethics
Applies appropriate metrics to measure, ensure, and demonstrate value of efforts
Challenges the status quo and champions new initiatives; acts as a catalyst of change and stimulates others to change
Demonstrates accountability for meeting commitments and deadlines
What You Will Need
Qualifications: Education and Work Experience:
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred
7+ years of experience with program management for medium to large scale projects
5+ years of experience in a senior management role preferred
Previous experience with building and operating an IT-portfolio management capability and PMO organization
Professional Certifications a plus (PMI, ITIL, Lean Six Sigma, etc.)
Healthcare provider industry experience is preferred
Complexity of Work:
- Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment
