Cigna Senior Software Engineer - Team Lead - Express Scripts in St. Louis, Missouri

Be a part of building a green field financial application that processes high volume and high value transactions between our supply side trading partners all the way to fulling our financial obligations with our clients and partners. The Pricing & Underwriting Developer supports various financial areas (such as client guarantee reconciliation and underwriting modeling) and is a resource for users to understand the technology delivered as well as performing ad hoc analysis. The position will work with various finance departments to identify and implement system enhancements in efficiency, accuracy, process improvements and automation, and user interface (UI) design. The position will also assist in testing model enhancements for accuracy and usability before changes are released to production.

In support of this we are looking for a skilled Java Developer who is motivated to combine the art of design with the art of programming. Candidates must be team-oriented and relational, as the existing team values collaboration to enable high output and good business value. Responsibilities will include translation of the UI design and backend that will produce visual elements of the web application. Effectively communicate to individuals at all levels of the technical and business communities. Develop a strong affiliation with the requirements, technology solution and operational readiness organizations, including the ability to use, share, contribute and influence the appropriate artifacts, approach and best-practices used to test enterprise-scale solutions.

Periodic travel may be required as offices reopen. Work location is flexible.


Technical knowledge or experience is a basic requirement for this role. The Senior Software Engineer also needs to be tactful and diplomatic in order to maintain a good working relationship with other Software Engineers, and across multiple teams. Includes:

  • Experience in cloud native architecture

  • Full stack developer with experience in Java 8 (Spring Boot) and Javascript (React).

  • Other technologies used include Pivotal Cloud Foundry, Kafka, Oracle, and Jenkins

  • The team has a strong culture of automation and unit testing, including jUnit, karma, jasmine, gulp, and webpack

  • Understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX

  • Understanding of cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them

  • Strong background in object oriented software development


  • Lead a team of 5-10 people, a mix of employees and contractors

  • Interacting with business, gather requirements, analyze, design and develop and maintain software as per the business needs.

  • Develop new user-facing features

  • Build reusable code and libraries for future use

  • Ensure the technical feasibility of UI designs

  • Optimize application for maximum speed and scalability

  • Assure that all user input is validated before submitting to back-end

  • Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders

  • Makes well-thought-out decisions on complex or ambiguous issues

  • Production support and maintenance activities


  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalency of experience and education is required

  • Strong mentoring skills

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work load and meet project deadlines

  • Strong knowledge in writing SQL and PL/SQL scripts for the database applications

  • Previous experience or knowledge using batch processing to build event-driven architecture between applications

  • Familiarity with building applications in a large scale enterprise environment

  • Understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git repository

This position is not eligible to be performed in Colorado.
