Job Description

We are looking for a talented research scientist who is as excited as we are about artificial intelligence, advancing science, and inventing the next generation of intelligent machines, and can lead and inspire a group of research scientists in teaching computers to reason. It is a technical position intended to recognize individuals with a clearly superior record of sustained technical achievement and strong potential for continuing contribution to IBM's growth. The ideal candidate should demonstrate clear technical leadership preferably in areas related to as many as possible of machine reasoning, deep learning, NL understanding knowledge representation, and representation learning, be able to drive growth in both business and technical communities, and be deeply and broadly collaborative across many areas both inside and outside IBM. This is a leadership role, and we expect the successful candidate to participate and have an effect beyond the normal job scope.

Responsibilities include significant contribution to the IBM Research's and IBM's utilization of leading edge technology in its products, services, processes or tools. This role is expected to lead and/or manage teams and complex projects, developing intellectual and social capital and defining new methodologies to enhance IBM's ability to meet its business objectives. We expect that the scientist in this role will use their position and network to act as an internal resource in recruiting new-hire candidates.

This position will be at the IBM Research Cambridge, Massachusetts Laboratory

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Expertise and experience in programming in one or more of these languages: Java, Python, R, C++, Swift, C# or similar, preferably including some experience with team development practices and modern testing and deployment tools (Devops).

  • Advanced skill level in solving analytical problems using rigorous and quantitative approaches

  • Advanced skill level in creating and leveraging AI techniques, such as knowledge induction, machine reasoning, NLP, machine learning, knowledge representation.

  • Experience communicating your and the team's research in technical communities, such as publications in top conferences like KR, ICML, ISWC, ICLR, IJCAI, AAAI, ICDM, NIPS, LICS, CVPR, or similar, technical talks, and blog and other social media posts.

Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

  • PhD in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or related technical fields

  • Experience analyzing large scale data from a variety of sources

  • Design, validation, and characterization of algorithms and/or systems

  • Contributing to open source projects

  • Project and team management experience is relevant to some positions
