Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY:

Washington University is one of the nation's preeminent research institutions. The Research Infrastructure Services User and Hardware Support (RIS-UHS) sub-group is a critical part of the research mission, educating and empowering investigators to facilitate access to services and scaled facilities (particularly high-performance computing). The RIS-UHS is part of the Research Infrastructure Services (RIS) group which is a mission specific domain of Washington University Information Technology (WashU IT) organization, working together to deliver a seamless technology experience.

The RIS-UHS acts as a consultant to researchers in a wide range of research disciplines, providing support and guidance in using RIS services, such as high-performance computing and data storage. Client engagement can involve anything from answering single questions to short meetings to long-term collaborations. Another important activity of the RIS-UHS group is to provide education and training on RIS services and common tools and methods used in research computing such as UNIX command line basics, using a job scheduler, python programming, and machine learning basics.

The successful candidate proactively engages with the research community and understands their scientific and computing requirements. They empower scientists to improve their research by sharing expertise about scientific computing methods and available resources, giving access to HPC resources, and guiding researchers in using these methods and resources effectively and efficiently. They steer researchers towards solutions that effectively and efficiently leverage resources across WashU IT. They participate in training and outreach efforts. They represent the researcher's perspective in working with RIS staff to evaluate new systems and configure existing ones.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Triage and respond to user questions and service desk requests for storage and compute usage.
  2. Meet with researchers individually or in small groups to assess scientific and computational needs.
  3. One-on-one training in techniques or software.
  4. Choosing and parameterizing software packages.
  5. Running software effectively and efficiently in the HPC environment.
  6. Troubleshooting problems with software and HPC resources.
  7. Teach training workshops, and occasionally develop or update the curriculum.
  8. Facilitate communication and problem-solving between researchers and other parts of IT.
  9. Work with the RIS staff in the evaluation, integration, and deployment of new technologies and configuration of existing systems (e.g., scientific software, cluster scheduler), with a focus on utility and ease of use for both IT and researchers.
  10. Collaborate with individual researchers on scientific projects, as time allows.
  11. Support the collection and reporting of usage and outcomes metrics for Research Computing.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in life sciences, computer science, informatics, engineering, related field or equivalent experience.
  • Science experience.
  • Minimum of two years of Linux experience.
  • Proficiency with R, Python, Perl, and/or shell.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced science or engineering degree.
  • Experience with bioinformatics/computational biology a strong plus; other scientific computing a plus.
  • Lab scientific experience a plus.
  • Experience with HPC and cluster scheduling software a strong plus.
  • Knowledge of extra languages, such as MATLAB, Java, C/C++ a plus.
  • Database management skills and knowledge of version control protocols (e.g. Git) a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and share projects with other IT staff.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and techniques quickly.
  • Ability to manage multiple assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to implement solutions which take organizational goals, objectives, and policies into account.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work with and train people of all levels of technical or scientific ability.
  • Excellent time management, organization, and planning skills.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $56,472 - $73,403 annually.
