Essential Functions POSITION SUMMARY: Washington University's Research Infrastructure Services (RIS) Information Technology group seeks a smart, motivated, curious, technically savvy, experienced systems manager to join our world-class team. Reporting to the Director of Research Infrastructure Services (RIS), the Manager of Systems Engineering is responsible for designing, developing, supporting and maintaining the systems that support the data storage platform, scientific computing platform and application services. The RIS services portfolio supports over 800 research groups with over 2,000 users consuming over 20PB of storage and a 10,000 CPU and core high performance computing environment. This is a hands-on manager/team leader role responsible for managing the systems engineering team, ensuring the systems and services meet the needs of the Washington University research community. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Function as Service Manager and Subject Matter Expert for RIS systems and services. 2. Effectively manage staff, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment. 3. Monitor and maintain the health and integrity of RIS systems, including upgrading and patching. 4. Participate fully in planning, building, configuring and running RIS systems at scale. 5. Design and implement robust and secure IT solutions within a fast-paced research environment. 6. Serve as accountable for the maintenance and upkeep of RIS systems and services. 7. Document systems and coordinate testing processes and procedures. 8. Manage systems engineering staff and mentor junior staff. 9. Conduct or facilitate training opportunities for the team members. 10. Work with RIS staff, other WashU IT teams, and vendors to solve critical issues related to systems. 11. Manage and track systems issues and working to address these challenges. 12. Manage the creation and ensure the upkeep of all operational processes and engineering documentation. 13. Run weekly team meetings and tracking the team's work. 14. Define and track performance metrics to ensure efficient current and future use of IT resources. 15. Provide technical insight to the team and end-users where you can address issues and problems. 16. Work effectively within a culture inclusive of individuals with diverse backgrounds, styles, abilities, and motivations, and appreciate and leverage the capabilities, insights, and ideas of all individuals. 17. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in information technology and at least five years of supervisory or management experience in an enterprise or clinical environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience in the following areas: * Automation frameworks (Puppet, Ansible). * Logging, graphing and monitoring (LogStash, Grafana, Splunk, Prometheus, PagerDuty). * Networking (Ethernet, InfiniBand). * Storage protocols (GPFS, NFS, SMB). * Operating Systems (RedHat, CentOS, Ubuntu). * Security (SELinux, NIST 800-171). * Job Schedulers (IBM/Platform LSF, SLURM, GridEngine). * Virtualization (VMware, KVM, Docker, Kubernetes). * Cloud Platforms (GCP, Azure, AWS). * Development experience with shell (Bash), Perl, Python, Rubby, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. * Version Control (Git, Bitbucket). * Continuous Integration (Jenkins, Bamboo). * Troubleshooting Linux software application stacks (databases, web applications, networks, etc.). Salary Range Base pay commensurate with experience.
