Position Summary:

The Developer 4 position, that focuses on RPG, is responsible for the technical aspects of both current and future business solutions at Bass Pro Shops (BPS). Project assignments will include maintenance, new development and adhoc request activity.

The team member will document/formalize technical design specifications based on defined business/functional requirements; assist with the definition of project deliverables; design, develop and test program logic and/or processes; establish data and processing specifications; and create documentation in accordance with established company/departmental standards.

The team member will assure quality in the work, descriptions and code across all functions, and assumes responsibility for all technical/development deliverables for assigned projects. The Developer 4 will assure that departmental standards and SDLC methods are followed and may assume the technical lead for selective projects. Together with the Application Manager and business stake holders the Developer 4 will plan all technical activities and will provide recommendations regarding the alignment of technical resources within the associated projects. When the Developer 4is assigned as the Technical Team Lead for a project, the Technical Team Lead will assume responsibility for deliverables of the other technical team members assigned to the project. This includes adherence to established standards and timelines associated with the project.

Other responsibilities include providing expertise in one or more specific technical areas, assisting team members in the technical engineering, project implementations, rotating after-hours support and mentoring of other team members and business stake holders.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with Application Manager and business stake holders to define requirements, functional and/or technical design for the improvement or replacement of systems and/or processes.

  • Develop accurate and efficient computer programs and/or processes according to departmental standards.

  • Maintain knowledge of standard programming languages, coding methods and operations requirements – with emphasis on those tools in use at BPS.

  • Analyze existing program logic and design enhancements based on correction and/or modification requirements. This includes providing of alternate solution recommendations (when available) that will minimize efforts while maximizing delivered value.

  • Create special reports, data file extracts and/or data conversion from/for existing databases.

  • Understand project design specifications and apply organization skills to meet time line estimates for assigned projects/tasks. Consult with Application Manager and project stake holders to resolve any real and/or perceived discrepancies.

  • Document internal and external modifications, changes, and/or processes in relationship to assigned projects/tasks. Follow and support internal change control processes and/or procedures. Participate in internal code review procedures.

  • Test and document programs and/or processes thoroughly.

  • Maintain test databases as needed.

  • Assume technical teams lead as assigned (based on project scope).

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in software development solutions and SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) methodologies.

  • Prefer Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, MIS or related field.

  • Significant knowledge (depth/breath) of retail, wholesale and supply chain operational demands/characteristics.

  • Minimum of 5 years of software development experience within the IBM i(AS/400/iSeries) environment. This includes the use of the following programming tool sets (but not limited to): RPG, RPGLE, CL, DDS, SQL, and Java/JavaScript.

  • Excellent problem solving skills, particularly in regard to anticipating and solving problems, issues, or concerns before they occur or become critical.

  • Strong written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills with both internal and external stake holders. The ability to organize and conduct user design (both functional and technical) and project meetings effectively.

  • Ability to work effectively both alone and within a team/cooperative development environment with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to learn BPS business concepts and technical/general business skills.

  • Provide both onsite and offsite user/technical support as needed/requested.

  • Mentor and share knowledge with other BPS team members.

  • A willingness to explore, learn and utilize new technologies to improve the overall availability of BPS applications and individual/team technical knowledge base.

  • Provide rotating after hours support as needed
