Abacus Technology Systems Engineer II in Lee's Summit, Missouri

The Abacus Team is seeking Systems Engineers II to assist the Service Center support operations. This position is part of a contract to manage enterprise IT components for the National Area and Transnational IT Operations and Next-Generation Support II Program (NATIONS II) for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). These are full-time positions.

Assist in providing and coordinating server related operations and maintenance support, including supporting a variety of operating systems (Windows 2008+, Linux, Redhat). Also assists in providing systems administration on local servers, accounts and groups; supporting file and print servers; supporting hardware; conduct patching and release updates; performing server health checks, server monitoring / reporting; performing data recovery and restoration; performing backup activities; conduct capacity planning, and resolve other server and system related issues. Works with other staff (field staff and junior systems engineers in other locations) to ensure system availability and operation.

May also provide collateral duty AISSO support for OIT support regions to assist with A&A support for the CISNet General Support System. This includes providing input to regional A&A packages and supporting documentation. Assist in responding to security and operational incidents and problems. Assist with data spillage identification and cleanup, as needed.

Provides after hour on call support for system and local network outages, and uses ticketing system (ServiceNow) to track security incident in a standard way.


Associate’s Degree required; Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is desired.

Experience and Skills:

At least 7 years of systems administration and/or engineering experience (Operations and Maintenance) including hands on experience with Windows and Linux operating systems; planning and setting up backup and storage capabilities; virtual backup libraries; data restoration; patching following patching SOPs; system monitoring; and daily maintenance. Must have networking experience. Experience supporting incident management desired. Must have experience using ITSM IT ticketing system; experience with ServiceNow is desired.

Solid understanding of IT concepts (e.g., telecommunications, computer languages, operating systems, database/DBMS, middleware, etc.) a must. Previous experience with DHS USCIS a plus.

ITIL v3 Foundations, CompTIA A+, Security+, Network+, and/or Server+ certifications desired.

Must be a US Citizen. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified or Sensitive but Unclassified (SBU) information. Position may require a current/active Public Trust or Secret clearance.
