Economic Research Service Geographer in Kansas City, Missouri

Summary This position is located in the Research Support Branch, Information Services Division for the Economic Research Service (ERS) in Kansas City, MO. In this position, you will serve as a senior level resource in geography and in the application of the Geographic Information System (GIS) in order to capture, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data used in conjunction with ERS research. Responsibilities Under the direction of senior staff, works with highly educated, doctoral level researchers to help define the data, spatial modeling, and statistical requirements for the spatial component of their projects. Develops and maintains contacts throughout Government, Academia, and the private sector regarding spatial databases. Works on cartographic design and data visualization, assists in designing and developing publication-ready graphics to support Agency research publications. Initiates and processes requests for data and participates in the acquisition and integration of new data sets to support objectives of agency research projects. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 1. Degree: geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields OR 2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND In addition to the basic requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications: FOR THE GS-12: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience utilizing a Geographic Information System to perform Geospatial analysis on research projects; and managing or acquiring geospatial data sets. FOR THE GS-13: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience utilizing a Geographic Information System to perform Geospatial analysis on research projects; managing or acquiring geospatial data sets; and ensuring that data sets comply with organization requirements or standards. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
