The AVP of Analytics & Insights will provide overall leadership of an inventive team that combines quantitative and qualitative methods to understand Client needs, drive business outcomes and uncover new areas of potential value. This position reports to the VP Marketing for Sun Life Financial, U.S.
About the position:
Success in the role will involve:
Managing directly a team of 7-12 (depending on rotational contributors) as they conduct over 20 projects per year
Aligning the Analytics & Insights efforts with the opportunities for greatest benefit to Clients and business results
Building a community of practice across Sun Life US among the many people and teams who use large data sets and emerging data technologies
Advocating for data-centric business practices, including collection, stewardship, conditioning and appropriate sharing of data
Encouraging better understanding of Client needs through custom research and engagement
Translating data and insights into better experiences for Clients, better outcomes for business areas, innovation of processes, creation of new offerings and development of thought leadership content
With direction from the VP Marketing, the AVP of Analytics & Insights will also be responsible for:
Partnering with business leaders in the U.S., analytics and insights leaders in corporate and other Sun Life operational regions, and other functional leaders within the U.S. Marketing team
Formulating specific projects, prototypes and pilots based on understanding of general business needs and opportunities
Envisioning the future state of the Analytics & Insights function at Sun Life in the U.S. and overall
Educating front-line managers and top management leaders about the value of Analytics & Insights and the applications to their business responsibilities.
Managing budgets and timelines within established parameters
About the work:
The nature of this role is to lead a team and portfolio of work that is always evolving. Examples of “typical” projects or initiatives are:
Development and evolution of the Benefit Profile and Stop-Loss Benchmark, industry-leading data tools that allow Sun Life representatives to provide Clients with objective context on the benefit plans and coverage levels for our products
Custom research, including innovative online communities that allow for ongoing surveying and dialogue with Clients and distribution partners
Application of advanced modelling techniques to optimize underwriting and Client service processes
Proof-of-technology tests for automating and accelerating core business processes
About you -- the ideal candidate will have:
Experience (preferred) in the group employee benefits sector (life, disability, critical illness, accident) and the healthcare insurance industry (especially self-funded medical and stop-loss solutions, dental and vision)
Player/coach mentality, able to contribute directly to work as well as lead the function
Commitment to data compliance and security protocols
Experience with modern data technologies; including AI-driven modelling packages; flat/lake and structured data architectures; data visualization and holistic business information solutions
Strong conceptual grasp and practical application of fundamental statistics
Understanding of market research methodologies used to gain insight into markets and Clients, including surveys, online communities, satisfaction ratings and co-creation
Knowledge of data automation and data capture technologies
Positive leadership style that encourages experimentation and skill-stretching, yet ensures professionalism of process and outcomes
Excellent communication skills
Comprehensive business knowledge of the insurance industry and general processes of insurance, including distribution, service and claims (preferably group insurance)
Intuition to know if a given variable might help predict an outcome
Extensive experience in a business setting involved with analytics
3+ year experience in a role with responsibilities for modern, AI-driven analytics programs
